There has been a lot of talk about the newcomers for the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason. Big names like D'Andre Swift are obviously mentioned the most as one of the guys that has the biggest chance of impacting this roster in a major way in 2023, but the truth is different.

In reality, Swift is a great addition to this roster that may still not even be the best running back on this team. Someone else may snag that RB1 job and the title of breakout player for the Eagles.

Based on the fact that this title usually falls to an offensive player and the only position on that side of the ball without a specific depth order is running back, it stands to reason that the new starter there will be the breakout player.

Contrary to public opinion, there is a chance that this player ends up being Rashaad Penny.

Penny may not be as flashy as Swift in terms of name recognition, but his upside is as high as Swift's and is potentially higher.

The new addition from the Seahawks joins after being extremely productive during his time in the league. Outside of one injured season where little happened, Penny has been able to account for 5.7 yards per attempt on very limited touches.

This means that Penny doesn't have much tread on the tires and is primed for an explosion if his touches go up. The Eagles should be more than willing to explore this.

After losing the obvious RB1 in Miles Sanders, there is a genuine competition in the Philly backfield that should ensure the best player earns the top job. There will still be a committee approach this year, but even Sanders was able to carve a role out for himself in a backfield that gave everyone plenty of touches.

Penny can be that dominant starter if he is able to bring any level of his production from Seattle to a higher number of touches on the ground. If you combine that with decent blocking and a career 75% catch rate, you have a guy that could explode onto the scene in 2023 if the Eagles use him right.
