The Denver Broncos' new head coach is finally settling into his new job as the 2023 season gets closer and closer. He is going to be tasked with the hellacious job of turning around what was a disaster in 2022.

This team has been in the dark for the last six or seven years, since the Super Bowl really. So, now it is time to make this the team that competes again because historically the Broncos are one of the greatest franchises ever.

Last offseason we thought they had it all figured out. They went and got Russell Wilson when the narrative was that all they needed was a quarterback. Well, he wasn't good and neither was the coaching. So, they scrapped all of that and went and got a new head coach who has won a Super Bowl before.

Payton is not only tasked with trying to turn this franchise around but he is also tasked with turning Wilson around. He has a lot on his plate, but so far, he is handling it well.

“You get into different portions of the season, and now we’re into kind of spring training if it was baseball," Payton said after rookie minicamp. "I have a house, a car; I know how to get home now, and you’re getting into the routine. But there’s always that checklist of things that — eventually, you have to leave at night because you’re not going to be able to get to everything.”

Payton has been in a similar situation before, so turning this franchise around isn't impossible. Prior to the Broncos, he was with the New Orleans Saints. They have been somewhat of a powerhouse the last decade or so in terms of a team that just consistently wins.

Obviously, for the Saints, things haven't been right since he left, but it was a similar situation. The Saints weren't anything close to what they are now before he was there. They were actually known as a bad team and one that consistently loses. This situation is similar, and his past could help him in his new endeavor.

“Everybody [is] working to put this together,” Payton continued. “There are little things that come up that you tweak or correct. The fields are in great shape and the facility setup is fantastic. I can only reference — again, I go back to that first exposure as a young coach in 2006 post-Katrina. That was a much different situation going into a team that had so much happen to them the year before."

While this isn't going to be easy by any means, Payton is by far the right guy for the job. You can hear it in his voice when he talks that he believes he can do this, and he wants to do this. It won't happen right away, but I believe it will happen.

It will only get easier after every day for him too, which is the scary part of the rest of the league. Imagine when this team is good and he is just coaching to win games, not to develop and rebuild. But for now, the most important part is that he is getting in a groove.

"This is different. But yeah, I think I’m getting settled in.”
