‘I wouldn’t say a thing’ – Broncos coach Sean Payton clears up the big misconception about WR Jaylen Waddle
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton made sure to clear some things up about wide receiver Jaylen Waddle this week.
One of the most exciting moments of the preseason for Denver Broncos fans came in a loss to the Green Bay Packers last weekend.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix connected with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, the team’s big offseason addition, for a huge gain.
The completion showed a hint of what could be to come this fall for the duo.
On the TV broadcast of the game, it was suggested by analyst Ryan Harris, a former Broncos offensive lineman, that Waddle ran his route too fast.
Payton, however, said this week that he loved the route.
“I wouldn’t say a thing with the route,” said Payton. “I loved it. (Pat) Bryant wins — it’s three different vertical seams — and when I was watching, I wouldn’t have been surprised at all to see Bryant get the throw. But Waddle got the throw. He won. I wouldn’t say a thing about the route. I loved it.”
Payton added that it’s possible for a wide receiver to run a route too quickly, but that this wasn’t one of those instances.
I think some of the confusion on the route was because Waddle had to break stride to make the catch. But it appears that was simply because that’s where Waddle found space, and Nix didn’t want to lead him into the safety.
Payton’s comments are a reminder that the TV broadcast doesn’t always tell the full story of a play.
