But most Tennessee fans will still appreciate Simonton's 2023 SEC predictions.
Simonton, unsurprisingly, has the Georgia Bulldogs winning the SEC this fall (he has them beating the LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship game).
Tennessee, according to Simonton, will finish No. 2 in the SEC East.
From On3: The more interesting question is who will be the No. 2 team in the East in 2023? Last year, I hit on Tennessee having a resurgent season, and I’m doubling down on the Vols again this fall. I don’t foresee the Vols being in the mix for a College Football Playoff (still skeptical about a major defensive leap), but even with the enigma that is Joe Milton at QB, they’re a safer bet to win 9ish games over Kentucky or South Carolina.
This is where most analysts/media outlets have the Vols entering the 2023 season. And it's a fair prediction. There's no reason for anyone to pick Tennessee over Georgia.
That's not to say that the Vols can't get past Georgia when the two teams meet in Neyland Stadium this fall — Tennessee is certainly capable of earning a win against the Bulldogs — but Georgia has earned the right to be viewed as the top team in the SEC until someone comes along and knocks them off.
Tennessee, of course, will be hoping to be that team in 2023.
