It's the most pressing item on the to-do list for those in the 49ers' front office. Nick Bosa is in the final year of his rookie contract and San Francisco needs to tie him down to a contract extension that will likely make him the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

Given the lucrative nature of the deal, it will not be an easy one for the 49ers to do. There has been no inkling of it being on the horizon as yet, but that should be no reason for nerves among Niners fans.

Indeed, Bosa reported to mandatory minicamp back in May, when he expressed confidence over signing an extension before the season, and recent history says a deal may not be too far off.

With high-profile extensions, the 49ers have made a habit of signing them right around the start of training camp, which gets going next week when veterans and the coaching staff join the rookies in reporting to the facility.

San Francisco has signed three blue-chip players to extensions in the last three offseasons.

George Kittle, in the unique circumstances of the pandemic offseason, did not sign his extension until August 13, 2020. A year later, Fred Warner signed his on July 21 and last offseason, after a protracted saga that included a reported trade request, Deebo Samuel reported to camp and put pen to paper on a new contract on July 31.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have said nothing to suggest the timeline with Bosa will be any different. They are calm and so is their notoriously relaxed defensive star. The deal will get done, and if the 49ers stay true to recent form it may only be a matter of days.
