The latest big NFL news could have an impact on the Indianapolis Colts. That is because the Minnesota Vikings have released star running back Dalvin Cook, putting a marquee rusher on the open market.
Cook is the latest victim to the evolving running back market in the NFL. The position continues to lose value in contract negotiations. Wear and tear and the reliance on the supporting cast are two factors why.
Which brings us to the Indianapolis Colts. Star running back Jonathan Taylor is due for a contract extension this offseason. The All-Pro rusher even changed agencies in advance of negotiations. Unfortunately, this development is not the best news for him.
Because Cook is just the latest running back to bite the dust. He joins Ezekiel Elliott in being released this offseason. Additionally, Leonard Fournette and Kareem Hunt remain unsigned, too.
It's not a favorable time to be a tailback looking to cash in on previous play. In addition to the above names, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Tony Pollard have been unsuccessful at landing new, long-term deals to this point, too.
More evidence that Taylor is not in the best position with negotiations around the corner. Especially since he is coming off an injury-riddled season that led to career-lows in rushing yards and touchdowns.
Of course, Taylor is still an elite talent that is capable of bouncing back in a big way next season. Playing in Shane Steichen's offensive scheme next to dynamic quarterback Anthony Richardson will likely help with that.
But the fact of the matter is that the league has shifted away from paying running backs. The value has decreased and it's not worth the risk of paying a position that takes so many hits. Therefore, the latest development could spell doom for Jonathan Taylor.
