Last year was underwhelming for Russell Wilson. Huge expectations were coming into the 2022 season with Wilson. Before he got there, there was a large belief that the only thing the team needed was a quarterback. That thought was indeed the wrong one
They are much further away than just a quarterback. They were a good head coach away too. Now they have Sean Payton, who can fix the franchise and the quarterback. Wilson got a lot of hate because of the bad season last year. The memes were out, the jokes were going viral, and even other NFL players were hating.
His teammates defended him all season long, and that hasn't stopped.
"He's a great dude, he's the same guy every single day, he works his butt off,'' left tackle Garett Bolles told the media on Thursday. "And I'm ready for that stuff to go away, and when it goes, everyone's going to eat crow.''
Wilson wasn't good, but he also played through quite a bit of injury when he probably shouldn't have. The Broncos traded for him because they believed in him. They believe he is the guy to get them back to winning football, and his teammates feel the same way.
There is a thought that Payton being there will help him, and the things he changed this offseason will also. He lost a ton of weight, as you can see when he is at the podium, and he worked relentlessly all offseason.
"I think he's phenomenal,'' Bolles said. "… We knew who he was as a person; we know who he is. … I love him dearly. I think he's one of the greatest quarterbacks in the game in the last ten years. Stats don't lie; just because you have one rough season in the last ten years, you can't dictate what type of guy, his personality, what he goes through."
This offense will go as Wilson does. If he is bad, the offense will likely be bad; however, his teammates seem to think last season was an anomaly. And it was. He had never had a season anywhere near as bad as that one before in his ten years.
Either way, it would appear that Wison's teammates still have his back and defend him in the best way possible.
