49ers named logical suitors for Commanders pass rusher Chase Young
Washington Commanders pass rusher Chase Young was billed as a good fit for the San Francisco 49ers.
There are only a few guarantees in life, and the NFL rumor mill is one of them.
Recently, the Washington Commanders declined to exercise the fifth-year option of pass rusher Chase Young, meaning the former first-round draft pick will become a free agent after the 2023 season. But the drama doesn't stop there. Washington is more than willing to listen to trade offers for Young should a good deal present itself.
And recently, CBS Sports put together a list of teams that would be great suitors for Young's services, and the San Francisco 49ers were among the crowded field of would-be NFL contenders.
The Niners were ranked fifth in "best fit" for Young's, 24, services. Ahead of the Seahawks on the list were the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears, in that order.
So what was the reasoning for the Niners being listed as one of the best-fit teams for Young's high-potential pass-rushing skills? Let's take a look and see:
"Nick Bosa is about to command lucrative money as the headliner of their pass rushing group, and they just paid a fortune for Javon Hargrave to join the interior, but after losing both Samson Ebukam and Charles Omenihu in free agency, they could stand to add depth off the edge. San Francisco relies so much on its "D" while sticking to the ground on offense, so John Lynch might be willing to bet on the long-term upside."
Young represents a long-term investment for a team that is going to owe quite a bit of money to its defensive line. He was taken in the first round for a reason.
In stretches when he has been healthy, Young has shown flashes of the type of NFL player he can be. And maybe a change of scenery will be better served for him, as his time in Washington appears to have ended sooner than both sides would have liked.
