An anonymous opposing SEC coach recently had a strange criticism of the Tennessee Vols.

Athlon Sports spoke to numerous coaches for their college football preview magazine. Those coaches gave their opinions, under the condition of anonymity, on various programs.

One of the coaches that Athlon Sports spoke with thinks the Vols don't have enough wide receiver depth entering the 2023 season.

"They need to develop more depth at wide receiver to stay creative," said the anonymous coach.

When I look at Tennessee's roster, the last thing I think is that the wide receiver depth is in a bad spot.

The Vols use the same three wide receivers during most games — that's mostly because Tennessee doesn't sub much on offensive drives.

Entering the 2023 season, the Vols have four wide receivers that can be high level starters in the SEC — Bru McCoy, Ramel Keyton, Squirrel White, and Oregon transfer addition Dont'e Thornton are all above average options that can help Tennessee's offense pick up where it left off last season.

Beyond those wide receivers, the Vols also have some talented youngsters like Chas Nimrod, Kaleb Webb, Nathan Leacock, and Nate Spillman.

Tennessee also has Cam Seldon, a true freshman who can line up at running back or wide receiver (Seldon gives Heupel plenty of options when it comes to being "creative" with the offense).

In addition to the talent that Tennessee already has on campus, they're chasing some of the top wide receiver recruits in the nation (and they're the team to beat for one of the nation's top 2024 wide receivers).

Tennessee is in a great spot when it comes to wide receivers. I don't know what depth chart that opposing coach is checking out, but he has it all wrong when it comes to the Vols' wide receiver room — it's one of the better position groups in the SEC.
