There is a lot riding on the shoulders of Joshua Patrick Allen.
Buffalo finally has their franchise quarterback and their eyes set on a Super Bowl, once again.
Looking at the roster, we wanted to take a look at three areas that may need improvement from last season in order to take that next step this year.
Protecting Josh Allen
The Bills will be successful if Josh Allen can limit the number of times he gets hit in a game. While some of this is self-inflicted (even he admits he can't keep this up), the line still needs to be better. There we go! The list is over.
In all seriousness, Buffalo's offensive line crumbled last season. In fact, it was so bad that some national media outlets considered it a "disaster" (at least for a few games).
Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott, with limited initial cap, were busy bringing in talent to protect one of the organization's most important assets.
Including the draft, the pair brought in Connor McGovern, David Edwards, O'Cyrus Torrence, Nick Broeker, re-signed David Quessenberry, and tried out a number of players including Alec Anderson.
It's clear that they want to see improvements and are going to do whatever it takes to push that group to be better. If the offensive line fails, Josh Allen will fail. It may not be always, but without protecting Allen the team can only go so far.
Helping Josh Allen
The Buffalo Bills spent substantial draft capital to get help for Josh Allen. Not only on the offensive line side of the football, but with dynamic playmakers like first-round pick Dalton Kincaid.
Kincaid is going to be a monster in the seam this season as Buffalo will look to deploy 12-personnel sets. Or, in the words of Brandon Beane, 11.5 personnel sets.
Pairing Kincaid with Dawson Knox, one of the NFL's highest-paid tight ends, should be a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses. Knox had the honor of being named the number 10 tight-end in football in the latest ranking from Jeremy Fowler at ESPN.
Buffalo should look to take the training wheels off early and let Kincaid cook. The offense could benefit greatly from it. Outside of Kincaid taking that important step, Ken Dorsey will be required to kick it to another gear as well.
Last year, Dorsey struggled at times. One of perhaps his biggest moments was having a meltdown in the booth after losing a close game to the Dolphins. Some of it was growing pains, injuries played a part, and statistically, it wasn't a drastic decrease with Dorsey calling the plays. However, pull aside a couple of members of the Bills Mafia and ask their opinion on Dorsey, it gets heated quickly.
Outside of Dorsey and Kincaid, there were a couple of under-the-radar pickups that will hopefully pay dividends for the offense this season.
On offense alone, Buffalo brought in the touchdown machine in Damien Harris, veteran journeyman Latavius Murray, Justin Shorter made some noise in the rookie minicamp and Allen even gushed about the acquisition of Trent Sherfield. Plenty of competition, but maybe not enough footballs to go around.
Josh Allen…
An area that the Bills need to improve on is with Josh Allen.
There are more games than not where Allen was the reason we won a football game. His sometimes superhuman feats have defined his short career.
With those insane plays come some costly turnovers. Allen needs to limit his mistakes and adjust his playstyle so that he is around for years to come.
We love him hurdling linebackers at midfield just like the rest of the Bills Mafia, but Allen would be wise to try protecting the football and his body.
Brandon Beane specifically opened up on this, talking about adjustments Allen needs to make as the Bills' franchise quarterback, and we couldn't agree more.
Everything revolves around Josh Allen. The weight of the city and the entire franchise rests on his shoulders. While sometimes he may seem superhuman (and even is linked to a superhero) Allen needs some help.
If Buffalo wants to take the next step, it starts and ends with Josh Allen.
