Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor is coming off an injury-riddled season that saw him produce career lows in games played, rushing yards and touchdowns. Therefore, he's looking for a bounce back season in 2023.
Prior to last season, Taylor led the league in rushing and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2021. With a new coaching staff, a healthier offensive line and dynamic rookie Anthony Richardson leading the offense, there is reason for optimism that Taylor gets back to that level.
As Taylor and the Colts gear up for the upcoming season, ESPN is gathering votes from league personnel for rankings at each of the 11 positions. Running back is the latest position that has been ranked, and Taylor will have a bigger chip on his shoulder after where he lands on the list.
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb comes in at No. 1 in the rankings compiled by ESPN. San Francisco star Christian McCaffrey and Las Vegas Raiders rusher Josh Jacobs round out the top-three.
Taylor, meanwhile, is not in the top-five. Instead, Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants and Derrick Henry from the Tennessee Titans also rank higher than Taylor in the eyes of NFL personnel heading into the 2023 season. The Colts star lands at No. 6.
After a historic 2021 campaign with 1,811 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns and an All-Pro bid, Taylor looked poised for the top spot for years to come.
But his 2022 campaign was challenging, missing six games with an ankle issue and running behind a porous line.
He was ranked as high as No. 2 on the list after being ranked second at the position in last year's rankings. The injuries and less than stellar season led to Taylor falling a bit in the eyes of decision makers.
But his talent is still respected around the league. And he should be in store for a bigger season now that he is healthy and will be running behind a healthier offensive line than what was on the field in 2022.
As one NFL personnel executive sees it, this reality showed the strengths and shortcomings of Taylor's game.
"He's got top-end speed and can get the tough yards, but he's not a creative guy who can do it on his own," the executive said. "He needs it blocked up and then he can make it happen."
Still, there is no doubt that Jonathan Taylor will be playing with a bigger chip on his shoulder in 2023, especially as he awaits a contract extension. Which is ideal news for the Indianapolis Colts.
