Brian Gutekunst's track record when it comes to picking in the third round of the NFL Draft has not been impressive since he took over as general manager of the Green Bay Packers.

Gutekunst has been running the show since 2018 and only two of his five third-rounders from pre-2023 drafts -Josiah Degaura and Sean Rhyan- remain on the team.

Rhyan was drafted as recently as 2022, so really, it's only Degaura that counts. It's moot, however, because Rhyan is on track to get cut if he doesn't have a good training camp and preseason.

Rhyan had an abysmal rookie year that was lowlighted by a six-game PED suspension and anchored by a grand total of one snap played – a kickoff attempt during the Week 9 matchup vs. the Detroit Lions. The suspension effectively ended his season because it was handed down ahead of the Packers' Week 12 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also had to forfeit those game checks.

It's not like Rhyan was even active for games, either. He was inactive for five of the first 11 games.

That'll obviously leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth. Rhyan was already struggling and buried on the depth chart before the suspension, so why would anything have changed in terms of his career's trajectory since he was disciplined?

The Packers aren't afraid to rid themselves of poor third-round decisions, either. Gutekunst cut 2021 third-rounder Amari Rodgers after the 2022 Week 10 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys because Rodgers never caught up to the NFL game. A poor showing over the next couple of months could create an even earlier exit for Rhyan.

The good news is, the Packers still do have some faith that he can turn things around.

"At this time of the year, we kind of experiment with a lot of these guys, but yeah, absolutely,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said back in May when asked if center could be Ryan's best position. “He’s a viable candidate to potentially be inside. We need more than one guy to snap. We always want to train three or four guys to get that done.”

Rhyan played right guard during the 2022 preseason. If he turns out to be a viable option at center then that will give him the versatility that NFL teams basically require when it comes to interior offensive line depth.

But so far, Rhyan has shown himself to be anything but viable. And he has to do that if he wants to make the final 2023 roster.
