Sean Payton is facing an uphill battle after taking over as head coach for the Denver Broncos.
Unfortunately, there have been more bad than good in terms of publicity surrounding the team. The development around Russell Wilson and his "diva-ish" ways dominated headlines across the sporting world. With sky-high expectations not being met last season, and Wilson's colossal downfall, the entire world seems to be glued to the Broncos and their every move.
Luckily, Payton has put his fingerprints all over the team and is doing his best to steer things in the right direction. With limited draft capital available, Payton has used this free agency period to bolster the team and set them up for long-term success. Many of Payton's decisions have been about protecting Russell Wilson.
The team signed a few offensive linemen who will make an immediate impact, a top-ten pass-blocking tight end, and some weapons for Wilson. However, one of the biggest decisions Payton made was actually something he didn't do: re-sign Dre'Mont Jones.
Jones, the talented defensive end, shined during his tenure with the Broncos. However, with the team unable to come to terms on any new agreement, they looked elsewhere and signed former Cardinals defensive end Zach Allen.
It appears that things weren't cordial with the split between Dre'Mont Jones and the Denver Broncos. Jones, who was signed by the Seattle Seahawks, met with the Seattle media to discuss the entire process. Quickly, Jones went on the offensive and called out the Broncos' front office.
Jones opened up, discussing an alternative the Broncos organization should've looked to instead of letting him walk. “I mean, s***, they should have just traded me from the jump. I was included in the trade. Denver said no…Denver didn’t pay me my proper respects, so I’m here because they (Seahawks) respected me from the jump.”
Adding further insult to injury, Jones highlighted what broke down during the process that led him to Seattle, "I don’t wanna make things sound negative, but Denver was kind of playing games. Seattle came calling in and they kind of presented us with their idea (of) what they wanted me to do and the total amount and we just rolled with that."
Jones was a dominant force during his time with Denver Unfortunately, it appears there were things going on behind the scenes that frustrated him. Dre'Mont will look to continue to dominate on the football field with Seattle this season.
For Sean Payton and company, this is yet another hurdle the team will need to overcome before a very important NFL season begins.
