San Francisco 49ers Lamar Jackson shopping? Maybe

If the San Francisco 49ers are in the market for a quarterback, look no further than Lamar Jackson.

I know, I know, we are all exhausted with the Lamar Jackson talk. But can we really help it? Since when as a football player this talented as Jackson been dangled in front of all 32 NFL teams and had no takers? Never.

So, naturally, my mind starts to wander… What if the San Francisco 49ers put together a trade package around Trey Lance, playing up his up-side, to land the former league MVP and face of the Baltimore Ravens franchise? I like it. Apparently, so does Bill Barnwell of ESPN.

On March 7, after the Ravens put the nonexclusive franchise tag on Jackson, Barnwell put together a list of teams likely to trade for him. One team on that list was San Francisco, who could put together a trade package around one of its young quarterbacks for the proven talent of Jackson.

Take a look at what Barnwell wrote:

"Why they should consider it: When coach Kyle Shanahan traded up to draft Trey Lance in the first round in 2021, he was picking a player capable of fitting into the league's most diverse set of playmakers. Every back and receiver the 49ers use regularly on offense is capable of lining up anywhere before the snap and touching the ball as a rusher or pass-catcher afterward. It's an offense of hybrids.

The only exception in that offense was the guy who handled the ball under center, as Jimmy Garoppolo was a pocket passer with limited mobility. Lance was something entirely different, and before his right fibula injury in Week 2, it was clear the 49ers planned to use him in a similar way to how the Ravens use Jackson. Lance suffered his season-ending injury while running Bash QB Counter, a run concept the Ravens use regularly with Jackson, who would fit comfortably into the offense Shanahan appeared to be designing for his second-year starter this season."

There you have it.

San Francisco should put together a trade for Jackson because it is exactly what head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted in a quarterback. And with Jackson Shanahan wouldn't have to wait for him to develop. He's as close to a finished product for his style of game as you can get in the modern NFL.

As debate swells over who should be the quarterback for San Francisco, Lance or Brock Purdy, or maybe even Sam Darnold, the 49ers should try their hand at landing Jackson. He's better than all of them anyway.

The cliche is the NFL means not for long. Championship windows don't stay open forever. At some point, San Francisco has to find the quarterback that can win the big game. Jackson has the talent to be that. What do you have to lose? Might as well give it a shot.
