There has been plenty of buzz surrounding the Minnesota Vikings and the future of the quarterback position with the 2023 NFL Draft right around the corner.

The Vikings, who possess the No. 23 overall pick, will likely miss out on the top four quarterbacks in this class. That being said, there are a few passers worth taking a flier on after the first wave of signal callers goes off the board.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell knows a thing or two about the position. O’Connell starred under center at San Diego State in his college days. His play caught the eyes of the New England Patriots who selected him the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

So when it comes to evaluating college quarterbacks, O’Connell has a good idea of what he’s looking for. KOC joined The Collin Cowherd Podcast to share the traits he looks for in young quarterbacks.

“You know, we talk a lot about fundamentals and techniques how you deliver the football the rhythm and timing, your ability to be twitchy and speeded up when you have to. Those are all great things. But when that rock leaves your hands, when you throw that football, you have to be in control of it at this level and be able to put it where you want it and be able to do it in different rhythms and timings and anticipations.”

It should come as no surprise to hear that accuracy is at the top of O’Connell’s QB check list. However the mental aspect of the position is also a priority for Minnesota’s head coach.

“I'll tell you this budget guys can see they can feel voids and vacancies and leverages and techniques, you know, and he's accurate," O'Connell said. "Guess what, you know, we're gonna be able to get the ball out of rhythm a lot. The pass rush may be common, but they're not going to get home in time.”

It remains to be seen what the Vikings will do in the draft, but the team is not tied to any quarterback beyond the 2023 season. Kirk Cousins is once again playing in a contract year with only Nick Mullens currently accompanying him in the Vikes’ QB room.

Minnesota has certainly been doing its due diligence on some of the draft’s top quarterback prospects. If the team ultimately decides to select a quarterback, it’s a bit of a relief to have O’Connell on board to vet a potential newcomer.
