Former Broncos' star thinks the team had a ‘great offseason’

The Denver Broncos went all out this offseason, but we said the same thing last season when they went and got a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Russell Wilson. But this time feels different, and it may be because we aren’t expecting this team to make the immediate jump to a playoff contender. Instead, we know this team will progressively, slowly get better.
The addition of Sean Payton helped get to that point. He is a guy that has turned franchises around before, well, that’s what he did with the New Orleans Saints. All of the moves they made in the offseason were to make this team better, and we are hoping they do. Honestly, in my opinion, they killed the offseason.
They addressed needs across the board, but the most noticeable was the offensive line. Last year they allowed Wilson to be sacked 55 times, which was tied with the Chicago Bears for the most in the league. That was a huge need going into the offseason, and they addressed it by snagging Ben Powers and Mike McGlinchey, two of the best guys at their position in this free agency class.
Those moves alone give the Broncos a successful offseason. To one former Broncos star, they had a “great offseason.”
“Sean Payton, legendary, Hall-of-Fame coach and play caller,” former Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall said on his podcast I Am Athlete. “…They go get stability on the offensive line and they make a few small moves, but very powerful moves on the defensive side… Great offseason.”
The Broncos also went and got Samaje Perine, who I think was one of the more underrated signings of free agency. They bring in a guy that can be the starter while Javonte Williams recovers and then can slide to the bench role when he comes back. Perine can also catch it out of the backfield and do a bit of pass protection. He did all of this at a high level in Cincinnati behind Joe Mixon.
There are some people out there, media that is, that thinks the Broncos overdid themselves in free agency by overpaying for some of these guys. Sure, they overpaid for some, but that’s what you have to do when you just had a bad season and haven’t had a winning season in seven years.
Marshall is right, the Broncos killed the offseason so far. But, now they have to finish it up with a great draft later this month.
