Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker had to wait a little longer than expected to hear his name called on Friday night, but he finally learned his NFL fate.
The Detroit Lions selected Hooker with the No. 68 overall selection (round three) in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Detroit traded back with Denver Broncos to acquire the No. 68 pick.
The Lions are a fantastic spot for Hooker. Detroit is planning to roll with Jared Goff again in 2023, but he's not considered a longterm answer at the quarterback position.
Goff is under contract for two more seasons with the Lions, but Detroit can move on from him after the 2023 season and face only a $5 million dead cap hit.
Landing in Detroit allows Hooker to take it slow with his recovery from his ACL injury, which he suffered in late November in Tennessee's loss to South Carolina (even though he's expected to be cleared by September).
Former Vols Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Cam Sutton, and Emmanuel Moseley are also on the Lions' roster.
Hooker was the 2022 SEC offensive player of the year and a Heisman frontrunner before suffering his ACL injury.
