The Denver Broncos shocked most people on day two of the 2023 NFL Draft when they decided to take a wide receiver with their very first pick of the draft.
It was shocking because the Broncos don't really have a need in their wide receiver room, and they didn't spend a ton of time talking to Marvin Mims, the receiver from the University of Oklahoma. But, they still took him and it could end up being better for the Broncos in the long run.
Mims is a guy who has very high potential, but it seemed like was never really the best receiver n his team until last year. At least, that's what I felt. Pairing him with Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, and Tim Patrick could be great. In fact, one analyst seems to think this move is one that reminds him of when the Broncos last won the Super Bowl.
The Broncos traded up to get Mims. I think he’s one of the most underrated pass-catchers in the draft, a tough and reliable player who reminds me of Emmanuel Sanders. – Chad Reuter, NFL.com
The Denver Broncos loved Sanders for a few reasons, he got the job done, and he did it at all costs. Denver would love to have another guy of that caliber on the outside. But who is the biggest winner from the get? Russell Wilson, just like Peyton Manning thrived off of Sanders.
And Mims game reminds me of Sanders. They both are great route runners with some speed. They have sure hands, but they won't wow you with huge catches where they go up and get the ball. The Broncos needed another guy like that, and they needed a guy who can play the slot, getting open over the middle and getting past the secondary.
They got their guy.
