Former Tennessee Vols linebacker Jeremy Banks was projected as a sixth-round or seventh-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

But unfortunately for Banks, he didn't hear his name called during the draft.

The good news for Banks, though, is that he's already found a home in the NFL.

Shortly after going undrafted, Banks signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (per Pewter Report).

I initially felt like Banks might end up with the Los Angeles Chargers where he could reunite with former Vols defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley (the current defensive coordinator for the Chargers).

The Minnesota Vikings would've also made some sense with former Tennessee outside linebackers coach Chris Rumph on staff in the Twin Cities (Rumph was on staff in Knoxville for two years during Banks' time at UT).

Instead, Banks is heading to Tampa Bay where there is also a Tennessee connection.

Former Vols defensive end Kacy Rodgers, a longtime NFL assistant (he started his NFL coaching career in 2003 with the Dallas Cowboys), is on the Buccaneers' coaching staff.

Rodgers, who played at Tennessee from 1988 to 1991, is the Bucs' defensive line coach/co-defensive coordinator. While Rodgers obviously didn't play with Banks or coach the former Vol linebacker, he's undoubtedly familiar with Banks' game. And you have to believe that Rodgers' intimate knowledge of his alma mater had an impact on the Bucs' decision to sign Banks.

As far as Banks' NFL career goes, he'll have an uphill battle to make Tampa Bay's roster (as is the case for all undrafted free agents). But the Cordova, TN native should have a decent chance to stick with the Bucs. Banks is extremely athletic and he has plenty of SEC experience. At the worst, he should be able to make an impact on special teams in Tampa.
