The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in one particular way. Sure, Patrick Mahomes led the way for Kansas City, but it was one thing he did.
I guess you could blame the defense for the woes in the second half, as the Chiefs' offense did whatever they wanted to while they were down 10 to start the second half.
Mahomes kept marching down the field and used receivers we know for a fact just aren't better than the Eagles. In particular, JuJu Smith-Schuster, who seemed to carve up the Eagles' secondary.
How did that happen, when the Eagles have the best passing defense and the best pass rush defense in the league? In fact, Philly had one of the greatest pass-rush defenses of all time.
But the biggest question is how the Chiefs' offense played so well in the pass game.
Per Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports tweeted that the Eagles' defense played man coverage on 63% of Mahomes' pass attempts in the Super Bowl.
Mahomes is a guy that you simply cannot play man-to-man against for that much of the game. He will die you up, and he will find the mismatch. On Sunday, it was whoever was against Kelce and Smith-Schuster.
Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league, and Gannon should have made adjustments. You can't keep doing the same thing expecting a different result. That is the definition of insanity.
Mahomes will exploit anything you think you have against him once he realizes you are doing the same thing. I would have liked to see Gannon blitz more and use more zone coverage.
But, it's too late. As Jalen Hurts says, you learn from these things and they make you better.
