The Minnesota Vikings don’t have to look too far for one potential first-round fit in the 2023 NFL Draft.
John Michael-Schmitz was one of the best centers in the nation during his super senior season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. Michael-Schmitz started all 12 games at center in 2022 and was tabbed as a First-Team All-Big Ten honoree by coaches and the media.
Michael-Schmitz is widely regarded as the top center in in the 2023 class. In fact, The Draft Network values him as a second-round prospect, though he could climb into the first round over the next few months.
Standing at six-foot-four, there is no doubt that Michael-Schmitz’s frame is NFL ready. His efficiency in run-blocking makes him even more attractive for teams that are weak up the middle. His high football IQ allow him to process blocking schemes quickly, which could help him see plenty of action as a rookie depending on his landing spot.
The Vikings have a decision to make on starting center Garrett Bradbury this offseason. Minnesota declined Bradbury’s fifth-year option, but after a strong showing in 2022, the team could explore re-signing him.
The issue lies within Bradbury’s projected value. Per Spotrac, Bradbury is projected to earn over $11 million per season in his next contract, which is a hefty price to pay for a center.
If the Vikings elect to move on from Bradbury, Michael-Schmitz makes perfect sense for Minnesota with the No. 23 overall selection.
