The Philadelphia Eagles could be in danger of losing one of its most influential pieces of the 2022 team.

The conclusion of the NFL’s regular season always brings about change across the league. The Monday following the regular season finale is referred to as Black Monday. It’s a day where eliminated teams often opt to part ways with members of the coach staff.

Following Sunday’s win, the Houston Texans announced its firing of head coach Lovie Smith.

While the Texans’ business is rarely of importance to the Eagles, there is reason to believe that Houston could be eyeing defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon for the opening.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero listed Gannon as one of Houston’s top candidates. The other possibility was San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, and former Texan, DeMeco Ryans.

The pair acknowledged that Houston interviewed Gannon before settling with Smith last off-season. And after the season Philadelphia’s defense has had, Gannon’s resume looks even better than it did a year ago.

This is the lone downside of being a contending team in the NFL. Coordinators who have had remarkable success are free game for teams looking for a head coach.

However, taking over in Houston is not a job for the faint of heart. While more candidates will surely emerge, the Eagles will have their fingers crossed in hopes that Gannon sticks around for the 2023 season.
