Wrapped in the numerous storylines circling Super Bowl LVII is the reality that it is the first Super Bowl where the two quarterbacks competing against each other are Black.
It speaks to how far the NFL has come. But the fact that it is yet another first in the year 2023 also speaks to how far the NFL still has to go. That history is not lost on anyone, including Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts.
In Monday's Super Bowl media availability, the quarterback spoke of the source that drives him forward — history and who came before him. Specifically, he spoke of the Eagles' quarterback history and how he feels burdened with continuing to push the game forward.
"It's crazy," Hurts said. "I think of all the quarterbacks that have come through Philly, Randall Cunningham, Rodney Peete, Donovan McNabb, Mike Vick, the history that we have in having African American quarterbacks at that position here in this organization, I think it speaks for itself. I told those guys long ago, I just want to carry the torch for them.
"So, I come here for a goal and for a reason. We want to finish it off."
During the build-up to the biggest game of Hurts' career, he's talked to McNabb, who has told him to treat the game like it's "all the same."
A non-Black quarterback who Hurts spoke with was Peyton Manning. The Hall of Famer offered Hurts advice on preparation while also echoing what McNabb told Hurts: Prepare for the game like it's one of the rest.
It is clear Hurts is drawing from history to push his story further.
