Nick Sirianni is ready to turn the page. The Philadelphia Eagles head coach addressed the wide receiver position recently, and his comments indicate where the group is headed going into training camp. Philadelphia is moving forward without A.J. Brown, and Sirianni sounds genuinely excited about the guys who are stepping into bigger roles.

Sirianni’s confidence in the receiver room

The quote that jumped out came from a press conference a couple of months ago, but it carries even more weight now as training camp approaches. Sirianni is excited for the extra opportunities DeVonta Smith is going to get his way.

“I know every time we’ve given him extra opportunities, he’s always taking advantage of those,” the coach said. “Now he’s going to get more of those.”

The coaching staff believes in the talent already on this roster. Sirianni also spent a lot of time in that press conference hammering the word “team,” emphasizing that the Eagles need guys who want to play together. Was it a slight at A.J. Brown? I don’t think so. Sirianni has a lot of love for A.J. But this is about the collective now, not any one individual.

We’ve been here before

Here’s the thing. This all feels eerily familiar. The pressure, the drama, the questions about whether the Eagles can bounce back. It’s giving 2024 offseason vibes all over again. That year, everybody was wondering if this team could get the band back together after a rough stretch, and they went out and won it all. So I’m choosing to be optimistic here.

Could this offseason have been less annoying? Absolutely. The A.J. Brown saga dragged on for months, the rumors never stopped, and it felt like every other day there was a new report from a national insider stirring the pot. But we’re past that now, and the Eagles have to focus on what’s in front of them.

Wide receiver battle during training camp

Sirianni knows the wide receiver position as well as anybody in that building. He coached receivers before becoming a head coach, and he understands what it takes to develop guys at that spot. So when he’s banking on big jumps from players like Dontayvion Wicks and rookie Makai Lemon to complement DeVonta Smith, I’m inclined to trust the vision.

The wide receiver room is probably one of the biggest position groups to watch heading into training camp. We know what DeVonta Smith brings. He’s the unquestioned No. 1 now, and he’s going to eat. But the question is who steps up alongside him. Wicks has shown flashes, and if Sirianni is already talking about giving him more opportunities, the coaching staff clearly has seen enough to feel confident. And then you have Lemon, the rookie out of the draft who brings that crafty, shifty element to the slot.

I think the wide receiver position brings interesting discussions to the table, and the Eagles need at least one of these guys to produce at a high level.
