The Tennessee Titans are "expected to have interest" in pursuing veteran quarterback Derek Carr when he becomes a free agent, according to a report from Ian Rapoport on NFL Network.
Carr, who has a full no trade clause in his current contract, informed the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the Super Bowl on Sunday that he would not accept the trade that the Raiders had in place to send Carr to the New Orleans Saints.
Additionally, Carr told the team that he would not accept a trade of any kind at this time, meaning $40 million of his salary will become full guaranteed Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders are then expected to release Carr later on Tuesday, immediately making him a free agent.
Rapoport named the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans as the four teams who are expected to have interest in Carr during free agency.
Unlike other NFL free agents, Carr does not need to wait until March 15th to reach an agreement with his next team.
The top free agent quarterback on the market has the freedom to sign immediately if he wanted to, but Carr is expected to make a number of free agent visits to interested teams before making his final decision.
Bringing Carr to Nashville did not seem to make much sense prior to the news of his release. There was no way a team in the Titans' current standing could give up draft capitol to take on three years of a nearly $40 million cap hit.
With Carr being released, though, it certainly opens up the possibility for the Titans to make a move for the four-time Pro Bowler.
Is Carr an upgrade over Ryan Tannehill at quarterback? Probably, but not by much. Carr has the big, flashy arm to make big plays while Tannehill has the discipline and accuracy to take care of the football. If anything though, Carr is three years younger than Tannehill and just as durable, only missing two games due to injury in his entire NFL career.
A new deal for Carr would also give Tennessee some stability at quarterback beyond the 2023 season. With Tannehill entering the final year of his deal, the Titans will once again be looking for a quarterback without a top draft pick this time next year if Tannehill is brought back.
A free agent signing of Derek Carr seems to be a much better fit now than it was a few weeks ago.
