The latest painful memory for the Buffalo Bills has to be Joe Burrow standing tall in the pocket throughout the Divisional Round.

I would have to look up the number of QB pressures the Bills generated against the Cincinnati Bengals. But if you ask Bills Mafia how many times it felt like Joe Cool was pressured, the answer will likely be "none."

And the worst part is there was a build-up process to the whole thing. Since the moment Von Miller went down injured, the Bills' pressure rate dropped so low that they became one of the worst pass-rushing teams in the NFL.

That's why, as we enter the 2023 offseason, many would point toward edge rusher being a team need for Buffalo. With a tough salary cap situation and nothing better than the 27th overall pick, it will be difficult to come up with a clear upgrade.

Making things even more of a headache is the fact that Shaq Lawson, who led the Bills' defensive ends in snap count percentage, is set to hit free agency in March. And he might be seeking more money than what Buffalo is willing to give him.

But do the Bills really need another pass rusher?

My vote would be "yes."

For one, I'm a firm believer that you can't ever have enough pass rushers. And we just witnessed how what seemed like the Bills' most productive unit fell apart as soon as Miller was out.

But according to The Athletic's "NFL Roster Evaluation Model," edge rusher should be the least of the Bills' concerns. That's a surprising and contrarian stance but let's get into their process.

The model tries to find out the answer to two questions:

  1. How badly does the team need an upgrade compared to other teams around the NFL?
  2. How big is that need compared to their own needs at different positions?

The exercise grades each team's priority from 1-10 with 1 being the lowest. Only the Bills and the San Francisco 49ers are ranked as a "1."

"Shaq Lawson is a free agent and loves it in Buffalo, though is likely looking for more than the Bills will offer," writes The Athletic's beat writer for the Bills, Joe Buscaglia. "Kingsley Jonathan showed some promise and will fight for a roster spot this summer. Despite all their draft investments, don’t rule out another one at edge rusher this April."

If anything, the priority ranking put together by The Athletic shows how the Bills could still be more than okay considering Miller is expected to return next season.

But even if there are higher priorities like a wide receiver and offensive line, Buffalo should be looking to add more depth this offseason.
