The Buffalo Bills' path to the Super Bowl might include a neutral site game.
As probably every NFL fan has heard by now if the Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs both make it to the AFC Championship Game, the two football behemoths would be playing in No Man's Land.
Although an unideal scenario, the league reached the decision in the aftermath of Damar Hamlin's collapse in Week 17 (Hamlin is still recovering but doing so from home!) as a consequence of the #1 seed battle being muddied by a difference in games played.
On Thursday, the NFL announced the game would be played in the home of the Atlanta Falcons, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
"As part of standard NFL contingency planning, Atlanta was designated a possible backup host site for postseason games prior to the start of the 2022 season and is almost equidistant from both potential participating teams' cities," reads the NFL's official statement.
"All other potential AFC Championship Game matchups would take place at the home stadium of the higher seed."
Mercedes-Benz Stadium's capacity sits at 71,000. The stadium opened in 2017 and has a futuristic retractable roof. It would be an odd experience to witness a Chiefs-Bills match-up under a dome, huh?
While the potential game site is official, the league also announced that "additional details, including ticket information, will be announced at a later date. Buffalo and Kansas City Season Ticket Members who previously committed to purchasing championship game tickets will have first priority."
If the Bills and Chiefs meet each other again, it would be the third consecutive year in which both teams meet in the playoffs. Buffalo has worked hard to make sure the third time is the charm, though.
The Bills face a much more challenging test to make the AFC Championship, however. While the Chiefs are likely drawing the winner of Chargers-Jaguars, Buffalo would host the Cincinnati Bengals if Joe Burrow's team takes care of the likely backup-quarterbacked Baltimore Ravens.
