With a General Manager hired, the Tennessee Titans are now directing their attention to finding the team's next offensive coordinator for the 2023 season, but bringing in the right candidate may be more difficult than most people think.
Identifying the right offensive coordinator is one thing, but hiring that candidate might be a completely different challenge. With the Baltimore Ravens parting ways with offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Thursday, there is now a total of ten OC job openings across the NFL.
The top candidates will be highly sought after, and the competition is fierce.
Here is the problem the Titans may run into. Being an offensive coordinator is incredibly difficult without a strong offensive line and uncertainty at quarterback. It may be hard for Tennessee to sell a top candidate on taking over play calling duties in Nashville when there are other jobs on the table that have one or both of those things.
The Rams, Patriots, and Ravens are all perennial contenders with marquee head coaches and the talent to compete for a Super Bowl if the team stays healthy.
The Jets and Commanders each have extremely talented rosters that are "a quarterback away," the cap space to acquire one, and a handful of explosive and young offensive weapons.
The Chargers have Justin Herbert. The Bucs (might) have Tom Brady, and one of the league's best offensive lines. The Colts are picking 4th in the 2023 NFL Draft and GM Chris Ballard has his eyes on a franchise quarterback.
Mike Vrabel is one of the NFL's elite head coaches and two of his last three offensive coordinators currently hold head coaching jobs around the league. But what about this roster outside of Derrick Henry and Treylon Burks is there to excite a highly sought after offensive coordinator candidate? You have a shell of an offensive line, you don't know who the quarterback is going to be, and you don't have much cap space or the top draft pick to completely overhaul things.
It's not to say the Titans can't land the right fit at OC and fix their offense in 2023, there are plenty of intriguing candidates taking interviews. But it's far more convoluted than hiring the hottest name on the market, especially when you're not the hottest job on the market.
