The biggest story in the NFL this week is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' ankle and how it will hold up in the AFC Championship game on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mahomes hit the practice field on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs.

On Thursday, Mahomes met with reporters to discuss, among other things, how his ankle feels after practicing.

Mahomes told reporters that his first practice on the injured ankle went better than he expected.

Mahomes then suggested that he can "still do a lot of things" despite the injury.

The Kansas City quarterback also told reporters that folks shouldn't be taking away too much from the videos that showed him walking without a limp on Wednesday.

Ultimately, we just aren't going to know how effective Mahomes will be until we see him on the field. Practice is one thing — Mahomes is pushing himself while doing all he can to avoid a setback.

But that won't be possible on Sunday. He'll have to essentially play with no regard for his ankle. And considering most quarterbacks wouldn't even dream of trying to play the week after suffering a high ankle sprain, I'd say there's a decent chance of re-aggravating the injury. All it will take is one simple misstep.

The Bengals need to prepare as though Mahomes will be fully healthy and then adjust to whatever they see on the field on Sunday.
