While the Tennessee Titans are currently listed as 6.5 point underdogs (+6.5) on BetMGM.com, they will have one distinct advantage over the Jacksonville Jaguars when the two teams square off for the AFC South title on Saturday night at TIAA Bank Field.
Thanks to the NFL bumping the game to the Saturday night time slot, Tennessee will come into the game with much more rest than Jacksonville. The Titans are coming off of an appearance against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football, while the Jaguars played their last game at noon on Sunday in Houston.
On top of that, because the game would not ultimately impact their playoff standing, the Titans rested a number of key starters against Dallas. Running back Derrick Henry, defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and defensive lineman Denico Autry are among the names that will enter Week 18 with a much needed 14 days of rest since their last game action. The same cannot be said for Jacksonville's playmakers.
Head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff will also have nine days to prepare for the game, which is usually a good sign. Vrabel is 9-1 as a head coach in the regular season when given nine or more days of rest and preparation.
The only loss of those ten games came earlier this season when the Titans lost a Week 12 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-16 after winning on Thursday Night Football in Green Bay.
Here's what Vrabel had to say about the extra rest and preparation his team will have when asked by Titans media about Saturday's game.
"It can just be helpful by how we use it. I am hopeful that some of those guys that were recovering, treating, or whatever they were doing, are going to be able to help us this week," Vrabel said. "Jacksonville is playing at a high level. They are playing with a lot of speed in all three phases. It will only matter on how we play, but hopefully we will take advantage of the time."
For a team that has been killed by the injury bug all season and consistently had players toughing out injuries while "far less than 100 percent," perhaps 14 days is all they will need to get an extra boost and punch a playoff ticket.
That is the hope for Titans fans everywhere. Yes, the team has lost six games in a row. Yes, they will have to win on the road against a red hot Jags team. Yes, the odds are currently stacked against them, but maybe the offense with Josh Dobbs at quarterback will be complimented by enough healthy playmakers to keep Tennessee's season alive.
You can never count Mike Vrabel out, especially with nine days under his belt.
