The Tennessee Titans have reason to be optimistic about this season, as the newly unveiled 2023 NFL schedule is more favorable in one key area.
Last year, the Titans had a challenging run, facing off against seven teams led by quarterbacks who had passed for over 4,000 yards in the 2021 season. The Titans went 2-5 versus those teams.
The just-released 2023 schedule reveals that the Titans will play only five games versus 4,000-yard QBs. Fewer matchups with high-performing quarterbacks could be the difference in getting back to the playoffs in 2023.
They play five games against four of last year's 4,000+ yard passers, including Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Geno Smith, and Trevor Lawrence twice.
That's a breath of fresh air, not having to face the firepower of Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in the regular season.
Given the state of the AFC South right now, those two matchups versus Jacksonville could and will most likely be the difference in the Titans competing for the division this season, or ultimately letting it fall into the Jaguars' hands once again.
As we begin to analyze the Titans' 2023 schedule, that potential advantage is worth considering. Sometimes, it's not just about who you're playing, but who you're not.
For instance, let's look back at the 2019 San Francisco 49ers. That year, they played against only four quarterbacks who had thrown for 4,000 yards in the previous season.
Their record that year?
13-3
Jimmy Garoppolo and a stout defense led that team all the way to the Super Bowl.
The reshuffle in the 2023 schedule may seem minor, but it could be a pivotal factor in the Titans' performance this season. The absence of some heavy-hitting quarterbacks from their opponent lineup could be the edge the Titans need.
