This is something that's been echoed a thousand times over the years and man, I've said it plenty of times, myself. But the No. 1 goal in training camp/preseason isn't to get better – the No. 1 goal is to avoid injury.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots on Saturday night. Early in the fourth quarter, seventh-round rookie Isaiah Bolden suffered what is believed to be a severe neck injury that resulted in immobilization as medical staff carted him off the field.

Below is the collision that led to Bolden's injury:

Both head coaches later decided to end the game. It's one thing to suffer an injury like this during a regular season game, but it's obviously a whole different topic when it's suffered during a meaningless preseason game. There's no point in risking any further serious injury.

Bolden is a seventh-round pick out of Jackson State. Per HBCUBuzz.com, he was the only HBCU player drafted in the 2023 NFL Draft after transferring from Florida State in 2020. Bolden's 36.9 yards per kickoff return led the country in 2021.

We'll provide more updates as they come through.

Update: Bolden was released from the hospital Sunday morning

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Bolden had feeling in all his extremities, but was taken to a local hospital for further tests and evaluation on Saturday night. Schefter followed up Sunday morning with a report that Bolden has in fact been released from the hospital and will travel back to New England with the team.
