There are several monikers for a quarterback: Passer, signal-caller, face of the franchise. "Coach on the field" doesn't always get used because it doesn't always accurately apply to every QB, but it does for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow, entering his fourth year as the guy (another nickname) in Cincinnati, has only grown into that coaching role according to offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

"He coaches pretty actively now. Probably more than he ever has. He's not afraid to speak up," Callahan told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "He's very selective with what he says and how he says it. And so it lands with maximum impact when he has something to say."

Burrow has had plenty of time to hone his coaching skills. He was out of practice for over a month while rehabbing a calf strain, making his impact felt the most in meetings and film study.

When he's out on the field working with his receivers, he leaves no room for interpretation from Callahan's perspective.

"He's an excellent coach. I think he's very clear what he wants and his expectations of what plays to be looking for, what he wants routes to look like, where he wants the spacing to be," Callahan said. "I could say the same thing. But it's always going to land a little more heavier when he says it versus even if I were to say it."

This type is expected out of a quarterback when he's given enough time to develop in the same system under the same coaching staff. Unfortunately for some QBs, that situation doesn't always unfold.

It's a crucial reason why the Bengals' offense is expected to look like a well oiled machine in 2023.
