After his superb performance in the Week 4 win over the Cardinals, talk of Christian McCaffrey becoming the first non-quarterback to win MVP since 2012 is starting to grow.
The 49ers running back has a stronger case after winning his fourth award of the season and second in as many weeks. Having been named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September last week, McCaffrey won NFC Offensive Player of the Week following his sensational showing against Arizona. McCaffrey has also twice win FedEx Ground Player of the Week this season.
McCaffrey scored four touchdowns as the 49ers cruised to a 35-16 to maintain their undefeated start to the season. He rushed for 106 yards and three scores while adding another 71 yards and a further touchdown through the air, McCaffrey's display putting him on pace to claim a piece of NFL history that would make the argument for him winning the MVP extremely tough to dispute.
He now leads the NFL with 600 yards from scrimmage, 47 more than his nearest challenger Justin Jefferson. McCaffrey's seven touchdowns are tied only by former 49er Raheem Mostert.
McCaffrey is on pace to finish with 2,550 scrimmage yards, a number that would surpass the previous record set by Chris Johnson (2,509) in 2009.
Johnson did not even get an MVP vote in that campaign, with the award won by Peyton Manning.
Yet as the focal point of the offense for the Super Bowl favorites at this point in the season, McCaffrey is playing under a more intense spotlight than Johnson did 14 years ago.
If he continues to stack together performances akin to the one he produced in Week 4, especially in matchups like this Sunday's primetime clash with the Cowboys, it will be extremely tough to simply limit McCaffrey to the Offensive Player of the Year consolation prize.
