The San Francisco 49ers are pretty set at the quarterback position, with confidence in Brock Purdy bolstered by his excellent performance in the Week 10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, they have arranged to bring a quarterback in for a workout.

San Francisco is working out former Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets quarterback Chris Streveler.

Streveler is not likely to be signed to the 53-man roster given the 49ers already have two backups in Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen.

However, there is reason to believe he could be a useful addition to the practice squad, at least for a couple weeks.

A former CFL leader in rushing touchdowns, Streveler's biggest asset is his ability as a runner.

Streveler's threat on the ground obviously doesn't come close to that of any dual-threat starting quarterback in the NFL.

But the 49ers could use his upside in that regard in practice to help them prepare for a looming rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13. Streveler would likely be used specifically to mimic the run threat carried by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

San Francisco had no answer to the Eagles' diverse running attack in last season's NFC Championship Game, in large part because of the conflict Hurts created in the minds of 49ers defenders as they read the mesh point.

Simply put, for the 49ers to have a chance of avenging that defeat, they must do a better job of defending against Hurts and the damage he can do as a runner.

Streveler would at best be able to do a poor imitation of Hurts in an attempt to replicate the dangers he presents in a practice situation. Yet as the 49ers enter a critical stretch of a regular season they hope will end with them as the number one seed in the NFC, that could well be why they have chosen to give Streveler a look at this point in the year.
