The offseason has typically seen NFL rivals interview members of the San Francisco 49ers' staff during their period of sustained success under Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.

This year is no exception, with news emerging from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Washington Commanders have requested permission to interview San Francisco's assistant general manager Adam Peters. Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Peters will interview for the Commanders' head of football operations role.

Peters has regularly been a target of teams looking for new general managers over recent years, but he has yet to land a top job despite playing an instrumental role in the 49ers building an excellent roster since Shanahan and Lynch took over as head coach and GM in 2017.

The Commanders' current general manager, Martin Mayhew, was hired from the 49ers. He is expected to remain with Washington for now, but will be evaluated by the new president of football operations.

Washington's request to interview Peters follows the news that former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers has been hired to help run the Commanders.

Myers has a close relationship with the 49ers' brass and he and Peters are both alumni of UCLA.

Whether those connections will lead to Peters getting the nod from the Commanders remains to be seen, but what is clear is that the 49ers may have a tough time hanging on to one of the most important people in their front office beyond end of this season's push for Super Bowl glory.

UPDATE: The Raiders have also requested permission to interview Peters, per Schefter.
