The Detroit Lions were shooting for the second seed in the playoffs on Sunday when they lost stud rookie tight end Sam LaPorta to a knee injury early in their Week 18 game against the Vikings.
It turns out the MRI showed that LaPorta hyperextended his knee and there's some bone bruising. The initial thought is that LaPorta would miss the Rams game on Sunday. Now there's been some change to that stance.
"LaPorta's got an outside shot now." Lions head coach Dan Campbell said in his weekly Monday press conference. "In the next 48 hours, we're gonna know a lot with him. We're talking in days, not weeks here. Which is a good thing."
I am not a doctor, but I think there's a blueprint for LaPorta to play on Sunday and that blueprint comes from another Pro Bowl tight end. Travis Kelce suffered this exact same injury before the Lions played the Chiefs in week 1.
Kelce suffered the injury on a Tuesday and they tried to get him going on Wednesday and he wasn't ruled out till game day on Thursday. Kelce was back at practice the next time the Chiefs hit the practice field.
LaPorta hurt his on Sunday and he'll have the rest of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before the Lions even take the practice field. Then he has Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get right before the Sunday game. If he's able to get back for even just one practice, that's really going to help things.
I don't want to get hopes up, but there's a shot here. We'll see what happens in the next 48 hours. We'll be sure to report any updates that come our way. Once again, I am not a doctor.
Did the Lions offense hit on their preseason stat projections?
All the way back in August we decided to do something new. We took the Lions offense and we attempted to predict the statistical output at quarterback, receivers, tight ends and running backs. The plan was always to come back after Week 18 and see how close we got. Here we are. Let's take a look […]
