His tenure in Pittsburgh may soon turn to fire:
Tomlin Out After 17 Seasons?
"What he does every year, he's all in, season ends, he takes a step back, reflects on where he is and where he is going," said Mike Florio on Football Night in America. "This year is a unique position for Mike Tomlin. For the first time ever, he's entering the last year of his contract. Never done that before. Has some things to think about. I'm told he is going to step back after the season ends, make a decision about his future with his family. He loves the team. He loves the young players that they have there. But, after the season, he'll huddle with his family and make a decision about his future with the Steelers."
The situation is odd because while Tomlin does take time to reflect on his past, present and future come season end, he usually has years left on his contract.
But this year is different.
Tomlin has yet to sign an extension past 2024, leaving many to ponder, particularly among his friend group that work in the media, if he is ready to take a step back.
There is talk that while Tomlin may be famous for saying he ignores the "outside noise" the persistent narrative among fans and even media in the city that it's time to move on is getting to him.
Nobody wants to go where they aren't appreciated, especially in a game built on the backs of fans.
And to be clear, the organization is fully behind Tomlin, with owner and team president Art Rooney II claiming that Tomlin is here to stay, with an extension on the horizon.
But the ball is in Tomlin's court. The decision is his and his alone.
And while many think it's time for a fresh start, citing valid reasoning, I would just say be careful what you wish for.
