They say If you can’t beat them, you should join them.

And after a 2023 season that saw the Bengals go 0-2 against division rival Pittsburgh, one player may be taking that cliche literally.

Here’s what tenured Bengal, yet Pittsburgh native Tyler Boyd recently said about joining his hometown team:

Boyd in Black?

You never know,” Boyd said to Dominic Campbell of Pittsburgh Sports Now when asked about potentially joining the Steelers. “I love Coach Tomlin. He’s probably one of the realest dudes in the sport’s business. Obviously, I played at Pitt, and I had a lot of run-ins with him and talked to him just about football. His personality is more like a father figure, it’s a great connection, but who knows? Even if I don’t go after this year, I could do a one-year deal at the end of my career and maybe finish up, but who knows.”

Boyd is a Pennsylvania native and former Pitt Panther great, going in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Boyd has been the slot receiver in what many deem the league's best WR trio, with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the outside and Boyd carving up defenders over the middle.

But with the veteran now slated to be a free agent and the Bengals having to find cash to pay both Higgins and Chase, Boyd likely calls a new place home in 2024, with the Steelers making a ton of sense.

Pittsburgh will likely part ways with WR Allen Robinson, who they traded a 7th round pick to acquire last offseason and will clear $10m in cap space with his release.

Not only would that allow Boyd to slide into the WR #3 role behind Diontae Johnson and George Pickens, it would likely be an upgrade to a WR corps that desperately needs a third option but more importantly, a veteran voice.

So we’ll see what happens. The fit almost seems too good to be true, though there will likely be mutual interest between both parties.

Time will tell if two and two can be put together
