While there has been noise about "talks" and "calls" between the Steelers and some offensive coordinator candidates, nothing has actually been set in stone.
That changed on Wednesday when the team held their first interview for the vacant OC position, per the team:
Thomas Brown Interviews for Pittsburgh's OC Position
Brown most recently served as the OC for the Carolina Panthers, a team that finished 2-15 and would have the first overall pick in April's draft if they had not traded away future first-round picks to select QB Bryce Young last year.
To be fair, Brown was a part of a mess that has been well documented, with internal problems, a regressed offensive line, a rookie QB, and arguably the worst group of skill players in the league as the "weapons" at his disposal.
After bouncing back and forth with Frank Reich as the playcaller, Brown held down the role when Reich was fired midway through the season, with the offense and Young showing slight signs of progression.
But before last season in Carolina, Brown was a Super Bowl-winning Assistant Head Coach with the Los Angeles Rams, studying under Sean McVay and helping coordinate an offense that would go on to win a ring.
Brown was highly thought of in last years's coaching cycle according to sources.
So it’s unfair to evaluate who Brown is one way or another. He’s never led a successful NFL offense, but he didn’t exactly have the ingredients to make a Michelin-star meal in Carolina.
For Brown to be the first official interview of the hiring cycle, it shows Pittsburgh is high on him. How well things go will likely be a determinant in his hiring.
