The Miami Dolphins have announced on Thursday they have placed linebackers Bradley Chubb, Cameron Goode, and Jaelan Phillips, plus offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Running back Salvon Ahmed was placed on the active/non-football injury list.

Even though it means they are not ready to practice yet, it's still not a reason for concern for Dolphins fans.

According to the NFL rules, the preseason PUP doesn't preclude players from practicing as soon as they are ready. The Dolphins could activate any of them at any point. It just means they haven't passed the physical to start training camp.

Therefore, it protects the team in case they are not ready by week 1. By then, the Dolphins could move them to the inactive/PUP or NFI list, forcing them to miss at least four games. However, it's too early to project that scenario.

After the players pass the physical and start practicing, they can't be placed on PUP or NFI anymore. If they get injured, they could only be placed on the injured reserve.

Adjusted rule

The NFL adjusted the IR rule. Until last year, players had to make the initial 53-man roster in order to be eligible to return from IR at some point later in the season. If a player was placed on IR while the team was on the 90-man roster, he would be out for the season.

Now, up to two players placed on IR before the 53-man roster formation can still be designated to return.
