The Indianapolis Colts are entering a make-or-break offseason for players, their front office, and coaching staff.

They have multiple in-house free agents, but only a couple stand out as players they should prioritize bringing back. The far and away top player on that list is the team's starting right guard, Will Fries. It's become clear that if he hits the market, he will be viewed as one of the top free agents in the entire league.

The Colts would be making a huge mistake if they let Will Fries test the market

The Colts drafted Fries in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He's been quite the success story for Indianapolis, going from being a seventh-round pick to a full-time starter. In 2024, he took a massive step forward as a player, and before suffering a devasting injury that ended his season, he was looking like an elite guard in this league.

Some had hoped that Fries wouldn't have a large market his offseason due to that injury, which could have helped the Colts retain him for a lower price than previously expected. That idea is out the window now, as Fries has been named by multiple league insiders who has a lot of interest across the NFL and is expected to sign a big deal this offseason. If the Colts view Fries as their top priority in retaining in-house free agents, they would be wise to get that done before the legal tampering period begins Monday.

The clock is ticking, though, and we have yet to hear of the Colts inking Fries to a new contract to prevent him from becoming a free agent. One look around the NFL, and you will see how badly teams need upgrades at guard. So, injury or not, it's not that shocking to see Fries is expected to have a robust market. The Colts saw how big the drop-off from Fries to the other options on their team at guard after his injury. And if they let him walk, they would potentially have three massive question marks on their offensive line for 2025. Anthony Richardson is entering a make-or-break season, and if the team is serious about giving him everything he needs to succeed, they can't allow Fries to walk out the door. The Colts are playing with fire, still having him unsigned this close to free agency, and now we will have to wait and see if they get burned.
