The last time Mason Rudolph was in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform, he waved goodbye to the fanbase after a snowy playoff loss against the Buffalo Bills.

A resurrection of both his career and the Steelers' 2023 season, Rudolph led the team from a 7-7 record to a 10-7 record and Wildcard round appearance amidst a Kenny Pickett injury and Mitch Trubisky benching.

And now, following a one-year stint with the Tennessee Titans, there is a chance he's back in black…

Mason Rudolph reached out to as potential backup in 2025

The Steelers have reached out to Mason Rudolph, eyeing a return to the quarterback position that's currently vacant, a source in the Rudolph camp told me this afternoon.

Omar Khan's expressed to that camp a willingness to have Rudolph, a free agent who spent last season with the Titans after his previous NFL career was in Pittsburgh, be part of the solution in Pittsburgh, possibly behind a different player starting, possibly Aaron Rodgers.

The report was the second of the day regarding rumors of a potential reunion, and it could have some real legs. Rudolph didn't leave on bad terms, rather he was a free agent and wanted a fresh start when it became clear the team wanted to go in the direction of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

With the latter of those two names now a member of the New York Jets and Russell Wilson's future in limbo, it makes sense to consider bringing back a player with such familiarity.

Not to mention, whether it's Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson or even a rookie at starting QB, the team will need more backups than Skylar Thompson, the only quarterback on the roster right now.

Rudolph played in eight games for the Titans last season starting five, and throwing for over 1,500 yards to pair with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. It's unlikely the Steelers would consider him as an option to start, but with the options dwindling, Pittsburgh is playing a dangerous game.

Ironically enough, it was reported on Monday that the Titans have an interest in signing Russell Wilson. It seems Tennessee might have a liking for Steelers QBs who end their tenure in Pittsburgh with first-round playoff losses.

Neither here nor there, the Steelers themselves still seem unsure of what happens at QB in 2025.
