Jauan Jennings has come into his own with four NFL seasons under his belt. Following a breakout year, the former Tennessee Vols standout could be in line for an even bigger year for the San Francisco 49ers.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch gave the local media an update at the start of training camp on star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who suffered a torn ACL last season. According to Lynch, Aiyuk is "not anywhere close to having a concrete timeline" for a return from his knee injury, which is obviously not a good sign for his availability in the early part of the season. WR Ricky Pearsall was also put on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the start of training camp.
Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL during the 49ers' 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs back on October 20. What that means is the opportunity for Jennings to continue to lead the 49ers' passing attack as its primary target among the team's wide receivers.
Last season, Jennings had far and away the best year of his career, starting with the Super Bowl LVIII in February 2024 when he had two receiving touchdowns. He was set up to potentially win Super Bowl MVP honors before the Chiefs rallied to win 25-22 in overtime.
That was just the start for Jennings, who more than doubled his previous best single-season marks in catches (77) and yards (975) with a career-best 6 receiving touchdowns over 15 games with 10 starts. Tight end George Kittle led all Niners pass catchers with 78 catches for 1108 yards and 8 touchdowns, with Jennings second in all categories.
There had been a previous report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter that Jennings wanted a new contract or a trade.
However, that was shot down – at least the trade aspect – on Tuesday by San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan.
We'll see if the Niners give Jennings any additional security as he again assumes a crucial role in San Francisco offense. And it's an important one for Shanahan and the Niners as well, after finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs in 2024.
