The Kansas City Chiefs saw one of the best free agent acquisitions in recent history hang up his cleats earlier this week.

Tyrann Mathieu retired from the NFL after spending the final three seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints. Before that, he spent three seasons in Kansas City, playing an outsized role in building a championship culture with the Chiefs' return to glory in Super Bowl LIV.

As Day 3 of training camp wrapped up on Thursday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid took the opportunity to address Mathieu's retirement at the top of his post-practice press conference.

"Just a shout out to Tyrann (Mathieu) for a great career, Reid began. "What a great career he had. The game will miss him, miss his energy. Definitely an energy giver, a great leader. Hopefully, he gets into coaching, because he'd be a heck of a coach. If he decides to go that way, he'd be tremendous. But we wish he and his family all the best going forward."

Asked about Mathieu's legacy, Reid explained the heart, prowess, and poise that Mathieu brought to the game during his illustrious career.

"Yeah, well, the legacy is great ball skills, great player, great guy," Reid continued. "Always been a team captain everywhere he's been at, including here. He got a Super Bowl championship here, and he was a leader on defense. So, I think he'll leave all that behind, but that's not even talking about being— if he chose to do that throughout his career, he probably set all the records of punt return, so he was tremendous at that. Anyway, I could go on and on about him."

And he did continue to go on about Mathieu because there's another part of No. 32's legacy that Reid and others in Kansas City will seemingly remember him for.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid unleashes his impression of Tyrann Mathieu aka 'The Honey Badger'

Mathieu had many nicknames during his time in the league, but none were more infamous than 'The Honey Badger,' which followed him around from his LSU days. According to Chiefs HC Andy Reid, that'll be part of his legacy, too.

"The honey badger," Reid continued, citing Mathieu's infamous nickname. "That'll be part of the legacy. Also, he would sit on the bench there, and he'd make all kinds of funny noises. You know, not only did he have the blonde hair, but he'd be over there making all- *inaudible animal noises* — making all those noises."

The transcription doesn't do it justice. Thankfully, our friend Matt Derrick at Chiefs Digest shared his video from media availability on X, in all of its glory.

After the funny aside, Big Red got back on track, wrapping things up nicely on the topic of Mathieu.

"But what a great kid," Reid concluded. "Loved coaching him."
