The Carolina Panthers’ front office and coaching staff have been busy days before the players return to the team facilities for the start of training camp.
Over the weekend, the team came to an agreement on a rookie contract with second-round pick Nic Scourton and on Monday hosted a workout with 14 different free agents looking for a chance to land with a team.
One of those players was former Rice tight end Graham Walker. An average fan might not recognize the name, but Walker is actually the half-brother of Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as the two share the same father.
Walker previously worked out with the Kansas City Chiefs back in May but a deal never marginalized that would have gave him the opportunity to catches passes from Mahomes. Instead, the Panthers decided to see what he can offer the team at the right moment in time.
On Monday, the Panthers placed starting tight end Tommy Tremble on the Active PUP list, meaning he won’t be able to practice with the team until he’s cleared. Tremble underwent back surgery in May and clearly isn’t expected to be ready by camp.
Which is what led the Panthers to bring in Walker along with two other tight ends in Justin Ball and Tyler Mabry. No official signing as been made yet, but the Panthers’ first day of practice isn’t until Wednesday.
Walker is the notable name, and not just because he’s related to one of the best players in the league. Walker went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft after spending one season at Rice where he totaled 24 receptions for 252 yards. Before transferring to Rice, Walker played wide receiver at Brown University for three seasons.
He’s got some solid size at 6’3, 227 pounds and the background as a wide receiver shows he’s got some hands as well. It’s definitely worth a look, and the same goes for Ball and Mabry.
What about Noah Fant?
Depending the severity of Tremble’s injury, another notable free agent recently hit the market in former Seattle Seahawks tight end Noah Fant.
In Fant’s first season after being traded from the Denver Broncos to Seattle, he had 486 yards and four touchdowns playing for then-offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who’s QB coach was none other than the Panthers current head coach Dave Canales.
Just two notable connections to draw as the Panthers look for ways to find a player who can take Tremble’s place while he’s off the field heading into camp.
Panthers’ most important defensive rookie is now under contract and Carolina’s pass rush ceiling may hinge entirely on his performance
The Carolina Panthers have undergone a significant defensive evolution this offseason. After a trying year for defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s bunch in 2024, the Panthers have spent handsomely to raise the floor for the defensive depth chart. Bobby Brown III, Tershawn Wharton, Patrick Jones II, and Trevon Moehrig headlined a robust free agency collection, followed […]
