Cordarrelle Patterson had yet to practice at the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp this year.

One of the best returners in league history, Patterson was vocal at the end of the season about his usage, and the writing had been on the wall for some time.

And on Monday, he broke the news himself…

Cordarrelle Patterson announces his release on Twitter-X

The demise of this relationship goes back to the end of the 2024 season. Patterson took to Instagram to voice his displeasure with the lack of playing time he received in the playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens.

"Guess I’ll shovel snow since I can’t touch the field,” Patterson said in an Instagram story. He would then add that his haters call him washed, but he's loading up for next season. And now it appears that his next season will be somewhere other than Pittsburgh.

Patterson was absent from the team all spring, making no appearances at workouts, organized team activities, and even mandatory minicamp. Through the first week of practice, Patterson wasn't spotted, and Mike Tomlin said he was day-to-day.

With what injury, we may never know, but now Patterson is gone. He saves the Steelers nearly $3 million against the cap, and if we're being honest, he wasn't going to have much of a role in the offense or even the return game.

Not only did the team draft Kaleb Johnson, but they also signed Kenneth Gainwell and Trey Sermon. Kaleb Johnson was taking reps as a returner during the first week of practice, and Gainwell did a lot of that during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A crowded running back room just got a little leaner in more ways than one.
