It seemed as though former Tennessee Vols WR Marquez Callaway was going to get a chance to share a locker room with Jauan Jennings again for the first time in quite a while. It appears as though that won’t be the case after all.

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Sunday that they were releasing Callaway in order to make room for the signing of veteran Robbie Chosen.

That’s a tough break for Callaway, as he had just had a tryout with the perennial NFC contender and appeared to have a sliver of an opportunity to perhaps find his footing again in the NFL, with a number of receivers banged up for the Niners, including Jennings.

However, just three days after signing Jennings, San Francisco decided they liked Chosen as a better option. Over the last two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Chosen has had five catches for 131 yards. 68 of those yards came on a touchdown catch in 2023.

We’ll see if Callaway can catch on somewhere else with the preseason yet to begin in full. Between injuries and performance issues, it’s possible another window opens up for Callaway to try to show a team he’s capable of turning his NFL career back around in 2025.
