‘I say that in a respectful way’ – Shane Beamer dropped some strong words on Tennessee’s wide receivers and it’ll bring a big smile to the faces of Vols fans
The Tennessee Volunteers will face the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon in Columbia.
The Tennessee Vols will travel to Columbia this weekend for a big SEC showdown with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer met with reporters on Tuesday and he noted that he watched the Tennessee vs Alabama game this past weekend (the Gamecocks had a bye week).
And it sounds like he was watching closely when Vols wide receiver Mike Matthews was called for an illegal blindside block on Alabama safety Bray Hubbard.
Beamer told reporters that Tennessee’s wide receivers aren’t just trying to block you, they’re trying to “kill you.”
“They’re a downhill run team,” said Beamer. “But then when they want to throw it, they’ve got really good players on the outside at receiver. And then I’m really impressed just watching their receivers block in the run game. You watch their receivers in the run game, like, they are trying to kill people. They’re not just getting in there and trying to block you. They are trying to come in there and kill you, and I say that in a respectful way.
“They do a great job. They’re a physical bunch, and always have been. And maybe they’re winning a little bit differently and playing a little bit different style wise, but when you’re 6-1 and ranked 11th in the country, you’re doing it the right way.”
Tennessee’s wide receivers have been vocal about how important it is to block and help out their teammates, and they’ve proved with their actions that it’s not just lip service.
The Vols’ wide receivers will certainly need to block well in Columbia this weekend as establishing the run game will be a big key to victory for Tennessee.
