Ohio State’s rising star is saying the right things Buckeye Nation will want to hear leading up to Week 1 vs. Texas
Just what you would want to see from the junior.
Ohio State had another wide receiver drafted in the first round this past April when Emeka Egbuka heard his name called by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Egbuka became the latest wideout developed by Brian Hartline to earn first-round status, continuing Ohio State’s run as a wide receiver factory.
Now, the Buckeyes could very well produce another first-round talent at the position next season—one who’s poised for a breakout junior campaign.
Carnell Tate ready to take the next step With Ohio State
Now in Year 3 with the Buckeyes, Carnell Tate is next in line for a shot at becoming a first-round pick. While he enters the season as the second option behind star wideout Jeremiah Smith, Tate is expected to play a major role in the offense and take on a leadership role as well.
When asked when he realized it was time to step up as a leader, his answer was straightforward:
“Emeka (Egbuka) was gone, Jack (Sawyer) was gone, JT (Tuimoloau) was gone—the entire voice of the team was gone,” Tate said last week. “We always need someone to encourage us, somebody to pick us up when the energy is low. We always need that guy.”
Tate will be among the players looked to for leadership this fall, alongside others like Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles. The Buckeyes are replacing a large portion of their roster after sending 14 players to the NFL in April, including several veteran starters from the national championship squad.
Last season was Tate’s first as a starter, and he delivered solid production: 52 receptions for 733 yards and four touchdowns. The former five-star recruit is known for his smooth route running and his long, athletic frame.
The Chicago native is poised for a big year in Columbus as he prepares to make a decision about his future after the season. Based on how he’s embraced his leadership responsibilities, it’s clear he’s fully bought in.
